The Challenge Kijiji Posed

How might we create a feature or tool that supports small businesses and local sellers on ?

UX Research

Secondary Research

Understanding Kijiji's Sellers

Through our Data Scientists our team has found statistics showing the habits of sellers on Kijiji to better understand Kijiji's sellers.

image.png

87% of Kijiji users sell one more item

Almost 1/3 of Kijiji sellers do not post listings that they've started

Daily average of 14.3% of listings do not get published

Primary Research

Interviewing Kijiji's Seller Demographic

The UX designers interviewed three Kijiji sellers who matched the target user demographic. This provided key insights that will help us better define and address the problem.

Male, 25

Convenience

"I don't want to be a salesman, I want the platform to do the selling for me"

Male, 29

Usability

"It's important to me that the platform is easy to navigate"

Male, 34

Traffic

"I want to know that the place I'm posting has lots of traffic"

After conducting the interviews and organizing the themes on the affinity map, it’s clear that convenience was the most prominent issue identified by the interviewees. Many users reported that posting an ad is time-consuming and doesn’t generate enough traffic. Supporting this, statistics show that 14.3% of Kijiji listings are never posted. Based on these findings, our group has refined and focused the problem.

Problem Statement

The Problem Narrowed Down

Canadians between the ages of 25-34 feel like posting an item for sale online requires too much effort and time

So We Thought About...

How Might We...

Help Canadian sellers between the ages of 25-34 alleviate the amount of effort and time required to post an item for sale on the Kijiji mobile app?

Persona

Solution

Putting A Face to Our Users

Before developing solutions, our team needs to clearly define and empathize with our target users. To achieve this, the UX designers created one persona based on insights gathered from our primary and secondary research.

Measuring Our Impact

What We Need To Consider

Our team has evaluated potential solutions for creating a feature tailored to small business owners and local sellers on Kijiji. We’ve determined that streamlining the listing process would likely reduce the number of listings that go unpublished each day. By simplifying the listing procedure, we aim to enhance seller retention on Kijiji overall.

Listing Completion

Objective: reduce drop-off rate of sellers

Metric: Percentage of posted listings from total started

Seller Retention

Objective: Increases amount of listing per seller

Metric: Average number of listings poster per seller

Solutioning

Brainstorming

Our team engaged in activities where each member contributed individually. We spent 5 minutes brainstorming potential solutions to address the tedious and time-consuming listing process for Kijiji sellers.

Our Final Decision Before Designing

Following our brainstorming session, the team has agreed to implement a solution using a built-in Generative AI model for new listings. Since the listing process for small business owners and local sellers is similar, this approach will benefit both types of sellers.

Our Sketch That Transformed Into High Fidelity

Since our solution involves integrating a "Generative AI Model," there’s no need to design new screens. Our team only needs to implement the Generative AI feature while adhering to the Kijiji style guide.

Following The Style Guide

We used Kijiji's style guide to help us reconstruct the listing process screens from pre existing screens

Our final prototype walk through consists of sellers adding a photo of what they want to list on Kijiji and our generative AI model will automatically auto populate unfilled fields on top of smart pricing for the listing

Next Steps Our Group Wants To Incorporate

Calendar Feature

Buyers can input their preferred date and time for pickup, which will then be sent to the seller for confirmation of availability for the sale. creating a efficient way of communication

Finding a way to elevate listing experience for small business owners

Our solution is effective for small businesses too. To enhance the selling experience further, how can we elevate it for small businesses?

What it Was Like Working in A Agile Team

Working in An Agile Team

This is my first experience working in an agile team alongside UX designers, developers, and data scientists.

In the beginning, each discipline shared their insights and potential contributions to the hackathon, which helped clarify our roles for the project.

In a cross-disciplinary team, it’s crucial to understand each other's expertise and processes. Our team took the time to explain the steps we would take and how we would coordinate to achieve a successful solution.
